Tēnā Koutou, Talofa Lava, Malo e Lelei, Namaste, Ni sa bula, Noaia’e mauri, Fakalofa lahi atu, Kia Orana, Ni Hao, An Nyung Ha Sai Yo, Nay Ho, Hej, Hallo, Sawat Dee, Cześć, Goeie Dag, សួស្តី, Здравствуйте, hola, 안녕하세요Greetings to our school families.

Two weeks down, and it feels like we never left! It’s nice to get back “into our groove”. Classes are underway with learning, and our regular routines of Assemblies, Team time and specialist teachers are all running smoothly. Once again we have had a large number of new enrolments at the start of the year – we hope that the newest members of our school whānau are starting to feel more relaxed too.

Schools are busy places, some things we do together, some things only happen in teams or individual classes. Please make sure you keep an eye on the School Diary in our fortnightly newsletters so you know what’s coming up. We highly recommend that whānau follow our Facebook page too if social media is your thing – we post many community and club updates here too that might be of interest to our school families, and in particular those new to the area. Finally, if this newsletter was not emailed to you by the end of today (ie: you are reading it via social media), please contact the school office so we can add you to our email database – we try to only print one paper run of newsletters a term.

Ngā mihi nui,

Kathryn Ramel

Are you keen to help with our Cultural Group?

Would you feel comfortable, with teacher support, coming along to teach our kids songs or dances from your culture? We would love to see a greater range of cultures recognised in our Cultural Performance Group. Not sure? Contact Miss Ramel for more information.

SBS Living Values – Value of the Term

Our Values Programme aims to inspire our young people to develop positive character traits enabling them to become the best people that they can be. It provides a common language amongst students and staff and is an important part of our daily curriculum. We find that students are more tolerant and cooperative in their interactions, assume responsibility for their behaviour and learning, and work together more cooperatively. Each term we focus on a different value.

This term our value is Respect – Whakaute. Respect is crucial for maintaining positive relationships and fostering a supportive school environment. Children who have been treated with respect are happier and more likely to trust others and feel secure in relationships. Good relationships early in life help children to build positive friendships and support children to self-regulate their emotions. Respecting others builds a foundation for a compassionate and an inclusive society, especially at school and at home.

Values Assembly

Every second week, when we don’t have a Full School Assembly, we have a Values Assembly. Whānau do not attend our Values Assembly – this is a relaxed time, a bit like a “family meeting”, and we really focus on our Value of the term, as well has acknowledging tamariki who have been “living their values”. These students get to take care of one of our special birds here at school, until the next Values Assembly. This week the following students were acknowledged:

  • Kea :Value Of The Term – RespectAlice M for picking up rubbish (Respecting our environment).
  • Kiwi :KindnessMia M Nikau 1 for being so caring towards other students in our class.
  • Kakapo: Personal Excellence – Improvement or doing their best – Scarlett VB and Natalia P for putting in their best effort and writing some amazing sentences.
  • Takahe: Determination – Perseverance, Resilience – Eli H from Mrs Stanbra for improvement in long jump.

Athletics Change – Term 1

We just did Athletics! Why are we doing this as a focus again? For multiple reasons – the Inter School Competition has been moved to Term 1 to align with the Hibiscus Coast Competition, which our top Athletes aspire to. Our School events are not only for “bragging rights” within the school, but qualifying for the Inter School event. Swimming is the traditional term 1 Inter School Event, but this has been postponed until later in the year due to work being done to upgrade the Mahurangi College Pool. Our school Athletics Key Dates are:

  • Mon 24.02 Senior School (Yr 5-6) Athletics
  • Tues 25.02 Middle School (Yr 3-4) Athletics
  • Tues 4.3 Whole School (Yr 1 – 6) Sprints

Parents are welcome to attend these – further information will be out closer to the time

Keeping Our Kids Safe

Please, please don’t park in the staff carpark here at SBS. The only way in and out of this carpark is to drive directly through where people are walking to or from our Crossing. We simply can’t provide parking on site for almost 400 kids – you need to be prepared to come a little earlier and walk on in, arrange your child to go on the school bus if appropriate, or we really recommend you trying an alternative spot to pick up or drop off your kids:

Safe walking/riding to school: To avoid the “busyness” immediately around the school at drop off and pick up times, we really encourage parents to let students walk or ride a little further afield for pick up. Kids really enjoy both riding and the independence of this. Safe options include:

  • Kia Kaha Drive or Brigette View (the children can safely use the crossing to access these)
  • The large Baptist Church carpark near Horizon School
  • Foster Crescent/Iris  St (accessed via our back pathway)
  • The Fire Station (accessed via Foster Cres)
  • The Tennis Club/Library (the kids love riding scooters etc through the park & the pathway is clearly visible and open)

Meet & Greet and Parent Homework

What a great turnout to our Meet and Greet this week! It’s about building community, meeting your kid’s teachers, friends, and other local families. It’s also a time to be thankful for this beautiful spot that we call home, hanging out by our beach on a balmy evening. If you haven’t dropped off your “Parent Homework”, please do – it really does help us get to know your kid a little better. (Spares are available from teachers or Rātā 1).

Keeping in touch – communication is key

Keeping in touch is important. We need to be able to contact whānau quickly and efficiently. If you have changed address or contact details, please let us know asap, either via email admin@snellsbeach.school.nz, or by calling the school office 09 425 6058.

  • Following our school Facebook page or Instagram

“Snells Beach School”, which operate as a digital newsletters. This is a great way to get quick updates and reminders. We post reminders and notices on Facebook – Instagram is more quick updates and snapshots of school life

  • Downloading our School App

Simply download the “Skool Loop” app from either App Store or Play Store & select “Snells Beach School” from the drop down box to receive instant notifications & reminders. This is an effective way to get immediate notices – they will pop up direct to your phone. Mahurangi College use the same app which is useful – just use the drop down box to change schools.

  • Subscribing to our school email database

Please email us admin@snellsbeach.school.nz to be added to the list. If you do not receive this newsletter via email on Friday afternoon, you are NOT in our database. All new families should have been added – please check. You can unsubscribe at any time.

  • School Newsletters

We do not usually print newsletters – just the first one each term while people update their contact details if needed. They are emailed out or linked to our school Facebook page. School newsletters come out once a fortnight – teachers may send home additional class or team messages at other times.

Toukon Ryu Karate

Classes take place every Tuesday night 6.30 – 7.30PM in the school hall.
My name is Paul Hart and I am the Founder and Chief Instructor of Toukon Ryu Karate New Zealand; affiliated to JKF (Gojukai Japanese Karate Federation). I have been involved with Martial Arts for over 35 years. I have studied Goju Ryu Karate for the past 26 years and I have been teaching a variety of students from the age of 5 through to students in their 80s!
I’m very excited to be bringing karate to the local community.
Karate is the ideal sport/activity for kids and adults alike. In today’s world it is vital that we equip ourselves, and especially our children, with self defence skills. Karate helps promotes self-confidence, balance, fitness, co-ordination, discipline, courtesy, health and wellness, responsibility, and will power. Children may start training in Toukon Ryu Karate as young as 5 years of age.
I hope to see all the students again from last year, but also all Beginners are welcome to come along and have a go. Uniforms are called a ” Gi ” pronounced ” Gee ” – parents will need to purchase one which they can do through Paul if they wish.
All other information regarding joining etc will be supplied at the class or feel free to txt Sensei Paul on 021 297 2431

I look forward to seeing you
