The sun is shining and warmer days are starting. It has been a busy few weeks of activities for different classes and groups across the school. We have had Poetry Recitals, In Class Speeches, Inter School Cross Country, Planting Days both here and at Scandretts, Tāwharanui trips – learning is more than books, paper and pen. I have enjoyed seeing our kids “get amongst it”, challenge themselves and feel successful with what they have achieved.

I’m excited to know that both our long awaited pump track and new blocks are on their way (details below). Our Board of Trustees have fought so hard on behalf of us all to ensure our school is  appropriately resourced. I want to acknowledge the work that they do, especially Hannah Edwards, our Board Chair.

We have the Education Review Office (ERO) in the school in Week 9, as part of our usual review cycle. In preparing for that I have been reflecting on the hard work done by our staff here – we are in a good place, and are already significantly down the road ahead of the upcoming Government changes to Education.

Bring on more sun, and happy days!

Nga mihi,

Kathryn Ramel

Junior School Poetry Recital

One of the most important skills we can give our kids is to be confident to speak in front of others, and have their voice heard. As adults, there are many important occasions when we need to speak in front of others – by exposing kids to this experience early, in a fun way, they grow in confidence and it becomes something they know they can do.

Following in-class recitals, this morning students in Year 0 – 2 spoke in front of the Junior School to recite their poems and they did SO well! Congratulations to the following students:

Year 0: 1st Xavier D, 2nd Charlie B, 3rd Supreeth, Merit: Parthu

Year 1: 1st Seb M, 2nd George M, 3rd Jamie M, Merit: Grace A, Joplin B, Chloe M

Year 2: 1st Kase W, 2nd Kira A-J, 3rd Siena P, Merit: Baxter T, Caleb C, Fionnula B

It’s coming! Our Bike Pump Track is FINALLY on it’s way!

We are so frustrated that our Pump Track has taken so long – it has all been circumstances beyond our control….so many wet months and super busy contractors…..but we are excited to announce that our Pump Track will be going in during October! A pump track is designed for slightly older (Middle & Senior School kids) where they can safely use the jumps, bumps and berms. Rather than pedalling much, you “pump” your arms on the downhills to generate speed. See the pic for the proposed design, and a pic detailing what the bumps will look like.

The Pump track will use a bit of our school field – we can work around this for PE and sports days. The reality is that our fields are so wet for much of the middle two terms, that the kids can’t use them anyway, so by using some of the field area, we actually create more useable space for the kids.

Our learner riders in Years 0 – 2 will still have the use of our existing bike trail around the perimeter of the field, which still includes some jumps, but is a little tamer. Unfortunately our existing bike trail sustained some damage which couldn’t be avoided when diggers were installing drainage swales down the boundary – this will be remedied and reopened shortly.

Kōwhai Block construction begins

Our new block “Kōwhai” will be coming in shortly, consisting of two classrooms. This is a “modular” block NOT a pre-fab, and is the MOE’s answer to avoiding big hold ups working with architects and the Council waiting for consents etc. Modular blocks are new, and built to spec off-site. We already have a modular block, Rīmu, that we are very happy with. Grounds works will start next week in front of Puriri Block, with the modular coming in overnight during the last week of school. Kōwhai Block will then become available to the school during Term 4, before having full classes in it in 2025.

Walkathon 2024

Our annual Walkathon is coming up in Week 10 (last week of Term). All funds raised will go towards updates and modifications on our playgrounds and updating our Bike/Storage around the school. So many of our kids use their wheel at lunchtimes – we need to make sure they can store these safely in a way they are taken care of. Further details out next week.
