Tena Koutou, Talofa Lava, Malo e Lelei, Namaste, Ni sa bula, Noaia’e mauri, Fakalofa lahi atu, Kia Orana, Ni Hao, An Nyung Ha Sai Yo, Nay Ho, Hej. Greetings to our school families.
You will read below about our visit from the author Tim Tipene last week – a fantastic experience. In amongst the humour and quick-witted story-telling, he told the story of how one year, with one teacher changed the course of his life. Their connection, through her belief in him, and his desire to live up to her expectations, reflected in so many ways what has been a focus for us this year – the link between building relationships and learning. It was inspiring to hear the impact of this in “real-life”.
The other huge positive from Tim’s visit was the effect on so many of our boys, and how they see themselves as learners. Tim’s story was very relatable for many, and reinforced the importance of positive male role models around our young men.
Nga mihi,
Kathryn Ramel
Principal

A brilliant visit from author Tim Tipene.
We were truly spoilt to have Tim Tipene speak at our school assembly last week. What an entertaining afternoon! Tim was honest, funny, sad, and most importantly “real” when sharing the story of the events that led to him becoming an author. Tim spoke of his struggles to learn to read and write, and how he believed he was “too dumb” to write what he thought the teacher wanted. One year with a teacher who believed in him changed both his opinion of himself, and the course of his life. Huge thanks to out friends at the Mahurangi East Library for making Tim’s visit possible – what a treat! We recommend you check out Tim’s books if you can – just ask a friendly librarian!
All welcome to the Mini-Gala next Friday 26 May 12:10pm – 1:30pm
As has become tradition, our Year 5 & 6 students will hold their Mini-Gala next Friday to support the Year 6 campers. All senior students run a stall at the gala, learning important economic skills such as pricing, planning and quality control. The Year 5 students participate, knowing that they will, in turn, be supported the following year. Philosophically, we like the fact that the students learn that you have to work for you money, rather than just holding out a hand to Mum or Dad. All proceeds from the Mini-Gala will be evenly split amongst our Year 6 campers.
Miss Thomas – well on the road to recovery
You may have heard that Miss Kerry Thomas was in hospital this week. She was suffering from an infection following an injury to her finger while gardening. We are pleased to report, that although it will take a while to fully heal, we are anticipating having Kerry back pointing her finger at Totara 2 next week. We wish her a full and speedy recovery.
