Tena Koutou, Talofa Lava, Malo e Lelei, Namaste, Ni sa bula, Noaia’e mauri, Fakalofa lahi atu, Kia Orana, Ni Hao, An Nyung Ha Sai Yo, Nay Ho, Hej. Greetings to our school families.
I have enjoyed looking back through the photos of summer fun this week – what a difference a week can make in terms of weather!
This term we focusing on the Key Competencies of Tu Pono Managing Self, and Whakawhanaungatanga Relating to Others. The KCs are the capabilities people have, and need to develop, to live and learn today, and in the future. They are the foundation life skills. Our parent challenge for this term is: how can you encourage your child to learn the Key Competencies at home? What responsibilities do they have to organise and manage themselves? What conversations do you have around relating to others? (Sibling spats are a great context for these discussions). There’s no right or wrong answer but, like everything, the more home and school talk the same language, the greater the understanding is for the child.
Keep safe on those roads over the weekend everyone!
Nga mihi,
Kathryn Ramel
Principal

Congratulations Mr Morley!
As announced earlier this week:
This term we have been working through the process of appointing a new Associate Principal. We were delighted, and proud, to find the position attracted a good number of quality applicants.
After working through the appointment process, we are happy to announce that Trent Morley, who has been in the Acting role this term, has been selected to be our new Associate Principal.
Trent is a loyal and committed member of our staff, who has worked really hard to grow himself professionally in every aspect. He has shown a passion for supporting families and students through his SENCO role, and has a wealth of experience and knowledge in the Junior School.
Well done Mr Morley – well deserved!
Beach Celebration 2017
Thanks to Helen Bartrom for this brilliant photo of our WHOLE school in the water. We were blessed with beautiful weather in which to make memories and celebrate this amazing area where we live, on our beach celebration day. Following our focus this year of “Care for Here” the beach clean up went smoothly, and we were well supported by parents and other volunteers. One of the highlights of the day was how little rubbish there was this year. This is fantastic news considering the heavy use Snells Beach gets over the summer period.
Following the hard work of the clean up, it was time for a paddle in the water which was almost tropical in temperature. Check out our Facebook page for some photos of the day.
Our Value this Term is Harikoa or Happiness
Check out these amazing poems written by students in Totara 1:
Happiness is the orange of the sun,
It looks like a horse cantering up a green, grassy hill,
Happiness is the smell of freshly baked biscuits,
It tastes like ice cream melting in my mouth,
Happiness feels like the silky coat of a horse,
It makes me feel positive and energized.
By Gabby Magnusson.
Happiness is bright yellow,
It looks like freshly cut watermelon on a bright summer day,
Happiness smells like crispy golden chips,
It tastes like a freshly baked brownie with a dollop of cream,
Happiness feels like waves crashing down on me in the sea,
It makes me chuckle and smile, and makes me happy.

Walkathon 2017
Our annual Walkathon is a little different this year. It will be held next Friday 17 March from 12:00pm – 3:00pm. Our Walk-a-thon is a fun and fit activity for all Snells Beach School children and their families, with all children reaching for their personal best distance.
This year, let’s aim to make it even better than before!!
We are raising money to go towards buying READING RESOURCES. A very worthwhile investment!
- The PTA will be providing refreshments (a sausage sizzle, baking and cold drinks) that will be available for purchase throughout this event. However, children are expected to have a bottle of water with them at all times and their lunch if they are not buying food.
- Spectators and family members can bring picnic blankets, rugs, picnic chairs, tarpaulin, etc, for seating comfort.
- Upon completion of the Walk-a-thon, students and their family members will report to the tally station to have each student’s lap total recorded on their pledge sheet. Students may then collect outstanding pledges.
$100 Warehouse voucher will be awarded to the student who can fundraise the most!
See the information sheet sent home this week for more details, or contact your child’s classroom teacher.
Beach Ed at Omaha
One of the most important activities we do as part of our Water Safety programme is the Year 5 & 6 trip to Omaha, for Beach Ed with the surf life guards.
This is a unique opportunity for our students to experience a fun, safe and educational day at the beach. The Beach Ed programme is delivered by qualified instructors in an environment that sees the children taught Beach Awareness and Safety through a combination of theory and practical participation modules.
The programme teaches children how to identify hazards and manage their risks accordingly. The activities include:
- Beach Safety
- Sun Smart Practices
- How to recognise dangers at the beach and water activities
A huge thank you to the large group of parents who came to support and have fun in the surf on the day.
