Tena Kotou Katoa, Talofa, MauriGreetings to our school families.

DSCN4533 (9)

As I was updating the school diary this week, I was reflecting on the opportunities that our students will have over the next few weeks to get out and about, and immerse themselves in nature. Our Year 6 campers head down to Tongariro after the long weekend where they will balance some challenges such as the high ropes course, and caving, with action packed fun in the white water rafting and (hopefully) snow. But alongside these organised activities, every year we marvel at the beauty of the mountains, the lakes, the rivers and waterfalls, and appreciate our time in a landscape that  contrasts so markedly with that in which we live.

Our middle and senior school students will have their planting days, helping to bring native bush back to our local area. In turn, this supports DOC’s plan of a “bird corridor”, encouraging native birds to increase in numbers, and providing safe pockets for food and shelter. I am always amazed when we travel to Scandrett Regional Park, and I see how much the planting in “our piece of the park” has grown. One day our kids will walk their kids through that bush, and reflect on when it was once an empty paddock.

At school, we will continue to work on the planting we have established here, as well has having a general weed, prune and tidy up. Any adult helpers would be truly appreciated!

Our teachers are currently hard at work, finalizing testing, and writing mid year reports. We would like to remind you that reports are just one piece of the “reporting to parents” process, and would encourage as many of you as possible to attend the Parent Teacher Interviews on Thursday 23 June, to answer any questions and clarify how your child is progressing. We have made some changes to our mid year reports this year, to make the reporting as “plain English” as we can, while also covering expectations such as how you can help at home and National Standards. We welcome your feedback.

Puriri 1 “Seasons Poems”

The weather this week has made us all miss the sunshine and warmth of summer! While we always hope the year 6’s find some snow on their camp, a milder winter on the home front is the preferred option. Here are some poems by Puriri 1 reflecting on the last days of summer sun.

Remember Summer
Remember dashing into the water,
face planting as you fall into a hole,
Remember lying on the shore covered in sizzling hot sand all over,
Remember diving under the waves like a penguin diving off an iceberg,
Remember licking your ice cream trying to catch every drop that falls from the stick.
That was summer!

Remember Summer
Remember burning in the hot, hot sun while lying in the sand,
Remember scootering to the skate park,
Then going up and down the small ramps and the tall ones too,
Then filling up our helmets with water,
Remember climbing a tree that was growing on a giant rock,
Remember drinking nice cool lemonade,
Remember playing on the playground and going as high as your mum,
That was summer.

Remember Summer
Remember running and diving into the big waves with your boogie board,
Remember eating cold ice cream on hot days,
Remember fishing with your Dad and catching a big fish,
Remember running to the shore and getting away before the wave catches you,
Remember showing friends and family your sandcastle,
That was my summer!

By Carlos Costa
Remember Summer
Remember going fishing,
Remember lying on your towel,
Remember diving in the waves and touching the bottom of the sea,
That was summer.
Remember when you found crabs in the water,
Remember running away from the waves before the waves hit you,
Remember bowling over other people’s sandcastles,
That was summer.
