  • A Huge Thank-you – Tuvalu Fundraising

Tuvalu Mufti We were very moved by the out-pouring of support shown via our recent Mufti Day, to support the people of Tuvalu, who have been so badly affected by Cyclone Pam. We are delighted to announce that a total of $183.60 was raised, as well as 135 tins of canned food, and 34 other food items (pasta, rice, water etc)  were donated. An amazing effort! The process from here is that both the cash, and food items have been passed on to the co-ordinators at Mahurangi College, who will be sending them on to Funafuti, the capital of Tuvalu. From there, they will be distributed across the nine islands that make up Tuvalu, in order of greatest need. A huge thank you to Mrs Gay Spittal, and our senior ESOL students who organised and managed collection on the day.

School ARBOR Day – Next Friday 29 May 1pm-3pm

On Friday afternoon next week we will be celebrating Arbor Day with a range of activities for the children and for any family members who would like to join in:

  • Ongoing Planting of the Louise Phillips Memorial Garden
  • Trees for Survival working with the students  in the hall pricking out this seasons seedlings
  • Worm Farm and Herb Garden
  • Vegetable Garden
  • Upkeep, weeding and caring for our established plantings
  • Goodall Reserve Clean Up – Junior children from Kauri and Kahikatea classes will be walking to the reserve

Please come along and join us for part of the afternoon, or even the whole afternoon! Bring grandparents, aunts and uncles and make sure you wear some gardening clothes!

Children are to bring OLD mufti clothes & gumboots to change into – no dress-ups please!

PTA News

The Great Snells Trail is happening again in 2015.  This is our major school fundraising event for the year and we hope to build it into a fantastic annual event for the whole community.  The date for the Snells Trail has been set for Saturday the 14th November, 2015.  Keep that date free in your diary!  The focus of this year’s trail will be on Art and Recycling as we combine garage sales throughout the community with art in all it’s many forms.  The children will be working in class to produce art for the trail along with involvement of local artists and craftspeople.  We hope to create a market day atmosphere throughout Snells Beach with the trail finishing at the school where will have food, performances, activities and more.  Updates and information will be in the newsletter and on the website from now on as we start work on organizing the event.  To make the day a success, we need your help.  Please start thinking about how you might be able to help the PTA and the Board of Trustees with planning and organizing as well as on the day.  We have five working groups set up to get everything going and they welcome volunteers to join the.  They are:

  • Garage Sales and Art Studios
  • Marketing
  • Art, Craft and Entertainment
  • Food and Raffles
  • School and Class organisation

If you have skills or experience you think you might be able to offer one of these working groups, please contact Kylie at snellsbeachpta@xtra.co.nz   If you have valuable contacts in the community who may be able to offer sponsorship or donate goods or services to the trail, please let the PTA know. Together we can make 2015’s Snells Trail a very special and unique event for our school.

Family Disco – June 12th 6.30 pm. SAVE THE DATE! More details to follow.

A Message from Mrs Neels

cher 2

As you all know I have been battling a rare form of cancer since September last year. I have been undergoing treatment which has finally come to an end. At this stage it looks successful which as you can imagine is a huge relief. So hopefully I will be fully back on board at school from now on. I would like to take this opportunity to say a HUGE thank-you to all the staff, students , parents and community of Snells Beach School. I have been overwhelmed with all the letters, cards, and support I have received from you all. It has been very humbling. I and my husband Tony & my daughters thank you from the bottom of our hearts. A few special people also deserve a special mention

  • Jill Corkin, Kathryn Ramel & Pauline Watkin who have been so supportive and allowed me to come & go from school as & when I felt well enough and have lent their shoulders to cry on
  • the marvelous mums who have supplied Tony & I with beautiful prepared meals for months. After 7 hour days at chemotherapy it was wonderful to be able to come home to something delicious to eat
  • Lovetta Bayer & Robaynne Magnusson-I cannot thank you enough for your support, love & prayers, & for organizing the meal mums. You are truly beautiful women inside and out  & I appreciate everything you have done for me over the past 8 months

So once again thank you to everyone. I am extremely lucky to belong to such a warm & caring community and…..I”M BACK!!!!

Cherylene Neels

HOME STAYS REQUIRED

We are looking for home stay hosts to host a group of Chinese students who will be coming to Snells Beach School for 5 weeks from 20 July 2015.

The children will have a parent with them (this is required at this age) and in some cases there are 2 children in the family.  If you have a spare room (or two) in your home and would like to be involved, please contact Jill Corkin through the office on 425 6058.  Payment is made for the home stay by the family. This is an exciting new opportunity for our school.

Community Notices

Change to Kowhai Connection Timetable

Please note that there has been a change to the Kowhai Connection bus services route and timetable. This service is now not coming directly to the school. Instead, students may catch this bus from the bus shelter on the corner of Dawson and Mahurangi East roads, and this is also the point at which they will e dropped on the morning run. For updated times etc you will need to check the Kowhai Connection website.

Important – this change applies to the private Kowhai Connection bus service ONLY – the school buses (no. 8 & 11) will run as per usual.

Snells Beach Netball Club

The Snells Beach Netballers had another successful day last weekend – well done! The “Ripples” (Year 3 team) won 3 -1 vs Mangawhai with Kezia Gleeson named player of the match. The open team, with students from Year 3 – 6, known as the “Waves” won 14 – 3 vs Kaiwaka. Congratulations to Charkana Green-McLeod  for being named player of their match.

Snells Beach Hockey Club

After a close fought game the Snells Beach Strikers defeated Matakana 3-2 in last week’s Hockey round. The Snells Beach Snap Dragons lost 2-3, also against Matakana in another nail-biter. The Year 3 & 4 Snells Beach Goonies got to put their feet up, with a bye. All Snells Beach Hockey teams are sponsored by Elite Windows.

Scandrett Regional Park – Public Planting Day
